Astana, the capital and the second largest city of Kazakhstan, is located in the central part of Kazakhstan. Astana, which means capital in Kazakh Turkish, was called Akmolinsk during the Tsarist Russia period, and Tselinograd and Akmola during the Soviet Union. On March 23, 2019, Astana's name was changed once again and it became Nursultan.
Date
Nursultan, the capital of Kazakhstan, which was the cradle of Turkish tribes such as Kipchak, Oghuz, Karluk in Central Asia and hosted states such as Huns, Gokturks, Kipchaks, Karakhanids, was established in 1824 as a military outpost during the Russian Tsarist period. Nursultan, which was the capital of Kazakhstan, which declared its independence with the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, has changed its fate completely since 1997 and has become a modern capital city where approximately 650,000 people live. Kazakhstan, which has a cosmopolitan structure, is a region where Russians live intensely as well as hosting all the elements of the Turkish world. 130 kinds of people and communities live in peace and harmony in Astana, where Islam, Christianity, Judaism and their places of worship are located.
Places to visit
Divided into two as north and south, the city is a modern world metropolis with its Soviet-era buildings on the one hand and magnificent structures on the other. Baiterek Tower is one of the places to visit in Astana. Considered as the symbol of the city, the 105-meter-long tower hosts an art gallery, aquarium and restaurants. This is also a monument of peace, tranquility and wisdom. Another monument is the Nursultan Pyramid of Peace and Tolerance. We recommend that you see this structure, which resembles a pyramid, illuminated at night.
Nur Astana Mosque, the largest mosque in Central Asia, is one of the most important structures in Astana. Especially with its golden dome, it is a must for an Astana trip. Built with Russian architecture, Assumpton Russian Orthodox Church is quite different from churches in Europe with its unique architecture and interior decoration. Khan Shatyr, which will include squares, streets, shopping and entertainment centers, an artificial river, mini golf and an indoor beach area, is designed to be wide enough to accommodate 10 football stadiums with a height of 150 meters.
The Presidential Center of Culture of Republic Kazakhstan, which displays Turkish architectural features and is used as a museum, exhibits 143,223 pieces of archaeological and ethnographic works. Felt carpets, traditional jewelry, books, equipment used in hunting and horse riding and historical documents are found in the museum, which includes a library of approximately 700 thousand books. Atameken Map of Kazakhstan, an open-air museum, is another museum spread over an area of 1.7 hectares. There are more than 200 miniatures of historical artifacts belonging to Kazakh culture here. Kazakhstan Presidential Museum, the most important piece of which is the warrior Golden Man costume, is another address you can visit in the city with its rich collection.
One of the largest parks in Astana, Lovers Park, Chess Square resembling a large chessboard, and Astana Arena for football enthusiasts are among the places you can add to your list of places to visit.
Food & Drink and Shopping
Although Kazakh cuisine is not a culture that we are unfamiliar with, it has basic features that distinguish it from us. Pork, lamb, sheep, beef, horse and camel meats, many kinds of fish and potatoes, rice and bread are indispensable for the table. Beshbarmak, soup, laghman soup, Kazakh, pelmeni, shashlyk, bavursak, kazkarta, and as a drink, kumiss made from mare's milk and subat made of camel milk are the most well-known local delicacies. Apart from these, there are also restaurants serving Chinese, American, Italian, French and Turkish dishes in Astana.
The right address to buy rugs, carpets, clothes, accessories and souvenirs reflecting the local Central Asian culture is the local markets of Astana. Apart from this, you can also shop at shopping malls and big markets, but let us remind you that the prices are expensive.
