Although Atatürk adopted the name El'azik, which means granary, abundance and fertility, in 1937, it became used as Elazig in terms of sound harmony and ease of pronunciation.

This beautiful city, where the ancient traces of history fluctuate in the image of the city, is one of our cultural heritages. Kömürhan Bridge, also known as İsmet Paşa Bridge, located on the 51st kilometer of the Elazığ Malatya road, was flooded after the construction of the Karakaya Dam. The history of this historically important bridge dates back to Murat 4th. The bridge, which was left unfinished with the death of the Sultan, could only be completed during the Republic period.
Consisting of two parts, inner and outer, Harput Castle was built on a rectangular plan by the Urartians. The castle is located on steep rocks that dominate the plain to the southeast of today's Elazig. According to the legend, it was also known as the Milk Castle among the people after milk was used instead of water in the mortar used in the construction of the castle.
The Syriac Ancient Virgin Mary Orthodox Church is located in the east of Harput Castle, on the upper part of the Syriac Neighborhood, which was a large neighborhood in its time. However, only a small bath remains and a church survived from this neighborhood. The church, whose floor and back wall were built on the Harput Castle and used as a monastery in AD 179, was opened to worship and visitation after maintenance in 1999. The church is the third largest church of the Assyrians in Anatolia.
Ulu Mosque, one of the oldest structures in Anatolia, built during the Artuqid period, Sarahatun (Sarayhatun) Mosque belonging to the Akkoyunlu period, and Kurşunlu Mosque belonging to the Ottomans are the most important historical structures of Elazig. Again, Hodja Hasan and Cemşit Bey Baths and tombs, most of which are from the Ottoman period, are among the historical structures that can be seen in Elazig.
Elazig Archeology and Ethnography Museum, located in the Fırat University Engineering Faculty Campus, also has the feature of being a regional museum. In the museum, ethnographic artifacts are exhibited along with very important archaeological artifacts obtained from the excavations in the Keban Dam lake area.

Known as the Caspian Sea by the locals due to its soda and salt-free water and its size, Lake Hazar, 22 km from the city center, is an impressive sight where blue and green meet among the mountains. The clear waters of the lake are suitable for boat trips and water sports. In the past, there is a sunken city in the depths of the lake due to the flooding of the cities in the region. This situation also causes Hazar Lake Beach to be preferred for diving.
Hazarbaba Ski Center, which is one of the points where winter tourism develops and 30 km from Elazig, takes its name from Hazarbaba Mountain. There are tracks suitable for amateurs and professionals here.
Fish production and fishing are carried out in Keban Dam Lake, which is the second largest artificial lake in Turkey after Atatürk Dam. Çırçır Waterfall, the youngest natural waterfall in the world, was formed from the Keban Dam Lake. The trout facilities around the lake are a very convenient spot to take a break. The feature of the Buzluk Cave, which is 12 km from Elazig and 4 km from Harput, is its geomorphological structure, climatological conditions and air circulation inside the cave.
