Date
The city, which was the capital of the French Cochinchin colony and was the capital of South Vietnam until 1975, is now divided into 24 administrative regions. The 12 districts in Ho Chi Minh have numbers, not names. Although the name Saigon was officially changed, it still continues to be used as the name of the district in the middle of the city among the people. The largest in the city, surrounded by many rivers, streams and canals, still carries the name Saigon. The port of the city was established in 1862 and has always been vital for Saigon.
