Kars, which is said to have taken its name from the Karsak tribe of Turks who came from the Caucasus Mountains in the ages before Christ, is mentioned in the works of Mahmud of Kashgar as "an animal, a steppe fox, in which a dress made of camel or sheep wool and beautiful fur is made from the skin of Karsak".
The written history of Kars, where the settlement in the region began in the Paleolithic period, belongs to the Urartu period. The administration of the city, which passed to the Seljuks after the conquest of the Islamic armies, remained with the Ottomans until the Ottoman-Russian War. It was under Russian control for a while, then came under Armenian and Georgian rule, and became a province of Turkey with the proclamation of the Republic.
