Osaka, Japan's largest city after Tokyo, is located in the Kansai Region of Honshu, the country's largest island. It is also the gourmet food capital of Japan, with the city being the ninth largest metropolitan area in the world and traditionally called "The Nation's Kitchen".
Date
The name of the city, whose oldest settlement is thought to have started in the 5th or 6th century, means "Big Hill" or "Big Hill". In 645, Emperor Kōtoku made this region the capital as Naniwa-kyo and built his palace in Osaka. With the relocation of the capital to Asuka in 655, it became an important land and sea connection point between Korea and China. The 10-year siege of the temple began when the Jōdo Shinshū Buddhist sect built its headquarters on the ruins of the old Naniwa imperial palace. The temple of the monks who surrendered in 1580 was demolished and replaced with Osaka Castle. The city, whose population was mostly merchants, became the most important economic center of Japan, developed a port, entertainment districts and a busy artistic society. But until an uprising in 1837, when a samurai named Ōshio Heihachirō wanted to support the city's poor families, he killed himself, and a quarter of the city was razed to the ground.
