Hakkari is a city located in the Eastern Anatolia Region, surrounded by the Turkey-Iran border in the east and the Turkey-Iraq border in the south, with Van in the north and Şırnak in the west, with an average altitude of more than 2000 meters from the sea. The oldest known name of Hakkari, which is almost 90% covered by the southeastern Taurus mountain range and the steep end of the southeast, is Çölemerik. Although there are different sources and different opinions about where the current name came from, it has been called Herkiyan, Hakar, Hakkariye and Hekkar throughout history.
Hakkari Med, which is located in the triangle of Anatolia, Mesopotamia and Iran, where the first settlement was seen in 7000 BC, remained under Persian, Seleucid, Abbasid, Seljuk, Mongolian, Karakoyunlu, Akkoyunlu and Ottoman dominions.
The city, which joined the Ottoman lands after the Çaldıran War, was occupied by the Russians after the First World War, but was saved. Hakkari, which was once a district of Van, gained the status of a province again in 1936.
Hakkari Attractions
Bay Castle, 8 km from the city center, is located on a steep, rocky hill. The reverse tulip decorations of the castle, which is thought to have been a settlement from the Iron Age to the end of the Middle Ages, are worth seeing. Kelat Palace, which is 17 km away from Şemdinli, and Kayme Palace on the north side of the old settlements on the Saray River are among the historical structures of the city to see. It is estimated that the Meydan Madrasa in the Biçer District was built in 1700. The Zeynel Bey Madrasa, located in the gardens in the Gülerek District, is thought to have been built between 1560 and 1578, when Zeynel Bey stayed in the Hakkari principality.
Located 12 km from the center of Şemdinli, Taş Bridge is located in a deep valley between the high mountains built on the Şemdinli Stream. Hakkari's surprise is the famous Rock Paintings. Thousands of rock paintings are engraved on the rocks of the Geveruk and Tirşin Plateaus.
Churches and cemeteries are among the historical and cultural textures of Hakkari. In the Konak (Koçanis) Church, 18 km from the city center, do not miss seeing an inscription in Nestorian language, as well as two circular sundials just below it. Again, the Halil Church, which is located 10 km from the center and belongs to the Nestorians, and the Derav Church, located in the Zap Valley, beyond the Üzümcü Village, are definitely worth seeing.
The Urartian Cemetery, located in the center of Hakkari, is a burial chamber dating back to 1000 BC. The Kırmızı Kümbet Cemetery is located on a sloping ridge from north to south in Gülereş Baba District. In this building, there are tombstones with rich vegetal and geometric patterns from the Ottoman period. Melik Esed and Kalealtı Cemeteries are located in Biçer District. The decorations of both buildings are quite impressive.
Cilo and Salt Mountains regions are one of the places where you can visit the steep and high mountains with glaciers on Hakkari, glacial lakes and various wild animals, and natural wonders covered with green valleys. Cilo Mountain is 37 km from the center. Access to Salt Mountain is via Yüksekova, 23 km by vehicle and 8 km by foot. Transportation to the lakes region of Semdinli Geverek Plateau and to Lake Bay is provided by a 150 km automobile and 15 km pedestrian road. Seyithan, Golaşın and Golan Lakes and Berçelen Plateau, which are located on Karadağ in Hakkari city center, are also worth seeing areas of the city. Zap Suyu Valley is a region where you can observe the wildlife. The region is known as the Devil's Bridge by the locals because the rocks rolling from the mountains in this valley form natural bridges. The Şine Rocks, located at the 39th km of the valley, and the Melise Water and Çeman Plains and Groves in this region are among the must-see places in Hakkari.
Buzul Mountain, which is the richest mountain in Turkey in terms of glaciers, where the snow thickness exceeds 2-3 meters, has a very important place in Hakkari's winter tourism with its 21 valley glaciers. You can also observe the deep crevices carved by the Great Zap Suyu, Semdinli Suyu and Nehil Suyu in this area, where you can see pictures from prehistoric times near Varagöz Valley and Sat Lake.
