Kuwait, the capital of the State of Kuwait, is located in the northeast of the Arabian Peninsula, on the coast of the Persian Gulf. Neighboring Iraq to the north and Saudi Arabia to the south, Kuwait means castle by the water in Arabic. Ruled by a parliamentary monarchy, Kuwait is the seventh richest country in the world thanks to oil, which accounts for 80% of the country's income.
Date
Founded by Ancient Greece in the 4th century BC, the city came under the rule of the Parthians and the Sassanid Empire. As a result of the settlement of Arab tribes in the 18th century, the Kuwait Sheikhdom was established and the foundations of today's Kuwait were laid. In 1899, with the agreement made with the United Kingdom, Kuwait, which had been under the rule of the Ottoman Empire since the 19th century, gained semi-independence. Kuwait, which gained its full independence from the United Kingdom in 1961, was occupied by Iraq in 1990 after a huge increase in oil production. Although the 7-month occupation was ended with the intervention of the coalition forces led by the USA, about 800 oil wells were burned, causing a major environmental disaster. It is one of the high-income countries according to the classification made by the World Bank.
Places to visit
You can dine and drink coffee against the view at the Kuwait Towers, which has a unique view of Kuwait, which is among the smallest continental countries in the world and located in the north-east of the Arabian Peninsula.
The Grand Mosque, one of the most important symbols of the city, where works of Islamic art can be viewed, the 150-meter-tall Liberation Tower, the Scientific Center, a beautiful underwater museum, the House of Mirrors, where you can buy souvenirs made of mirrors and visit the art gallery, the Corniche where you can take beach walks and Old Kuwait Village, where you can witness local Kuwaiti life, Magic Planet, an amusement park with many toys, and Taref Rajab Islamic Calligraphy Museum, where works of Islamic calligraphy are exhibited, are among the must-visit places in Kuwait.
Apart from these, although the National Museum witnessed the loss of many works of art during the war, it was partially renovated and opened to visitors and Islamic mosaics are still visible. Sadu House, a museum made of coral and plaster where the works of art of the Bedouin people are preserved, Bayt Al-Badr, the residence of the Al Badr family open to tourists, and the Science and Natural History Museum are among the places that should be on the Kuwait travel list.
Food & Drink and Shopping
Kuwait's cosmopolitan structure has also led to the diversification of its food culture, shaped by Arabic and Middle Eastern cuisines. Apart from this, mutabbak, basal ahshi, lahm bilbayd and felafel are the most basic regional dishes of the country, where there are many restaurants serving world cuisine. Cardamom coffee and shisha, a local drink made with a mixture of cardamom and coffee, are among the most famous drinks.
